Methods for improving salt spray resistance of blue passivation process for zinc-nickel alloys

Zinc-nickel alloys are commonly used as plating materials for corrosion protection applications, and their salt spray resistance is critical for many industrial uses. Especially in areas such as marine equipment and automotive brake calipers, the protective properties of zinc-nickel alloys have a direct impact on the service life and reliability of the equipment. So how can we improve the salt spray resistance of zinc-nickel alloy blue passivation processes?

Optimization of process parameters

Improving the salt spray resistance of the blue passivation process for zinc-nickel alloys requires optimization of the composition of the passivate and the process conditions:

pH control: The pH value of the passivate is an important factor affecting the salt spray resistance. By adjusting the pH value of the passivation solution, the denseness of the passivation film can be improved.

Temperature and time: Appropriate process temperature and treatment time are also critical. Controlling the temperature of the passivation solution and the treatment time will result in a better formation of a uniform and dense passivation film.

Use of high-performance passivation solutions

Choosing the right passivate is essential to improve salt spray resistance. Bigely blue passivate for zinc-nickel alloys, Zn-323, performs well in practical applications. In the Neutral Salt Spray Accelerated Corrosion Test (NSS), Zn-323 showed white rust for more than 240 hours and red rust for more than 1,000 hours. It was able to provide protection for a longer period of time. The use of Zn-323 passivate can form a dense and non-porous passivation film on the surface of the plated layer, effectively blocking the intrusion of corrosive media and thus improving the salt spray resistance of the plated layer.

In addition to the above methods, regular maintenance and monitoring are also important to ensure salt spray resistance. Regular testing and adjustment of parameters such as passivation solution composition, pH, temperature, etc. can ensure the stability and continuity of the process, thus maintaining good protective properties of the coating.
