Why does zinc alloy plating blister?

Regarding the production of zinc alloy plating, why the plating layer will blister, we have summarized the following reasons and countermeasures:

1. Inadequate surface treatment: Zinc alloys need to undergo a thorough cleaning and surface pretreatment process, including degreasing, pickling, activation, etc., before plating. As an example, if residual oil is not completely cleaned (as would be the case if a suitable zinc alloy degreasing powder is not used), it will prevent the plating layer from combining correctly with the substrate during the plating process, resulting in uneven plating or the formation of air bubbles under the plating layer, which can cause blistering.

2. Imbalance of electroplating solution composition: Normal electroplating solution should contain appropriate amount of zinc ions, brightening agents, stabilizers, wetting agents, etc., and the ratio of these components, if not appropriate, including the main salt concentration is too low or additives failure, may lead to defects such as pinholes, bubbles, and other defects in the formation of plating layer.

3. Improper process parameters: current density, plating solution temperature, pH value, degree of agitation, etc. in the plating process will directly affect the quality of the plated layer. If the current density is too high or the temperature is not properly controlled, it may accelerate the precipitation of hydrogen, so that the hydrogen gathered under the plating layer to form bubbles. At the same time, inappropriate pH value or uneven agitation may also affect the uniformity and bonding strength of the plated layer.

These problems should be addressed through the following measures:

① Carry out thorough pre-treatment to ensure that the surface is free of any impurities, for this purpose, we can use Bigely zinc alloy degreasing powder BC-1103, which does not contain strong alkali and phosphate, will not cause corrosion of the workpiece substrate, and it can quickly remove the clean oil, laying a good foundation for the quality of the subsequent plating layer.

②Control the plating process parameters, such as current density, temperature, pH and stirring intensity, etc., so that it is in the appropriate plating range.

③ Regularly analyze and maintain the composition of the plating solution to keep the quality of additives and the concentration of impurities low.
