In the process of using electroless nickel plating solution, some products of electroless nickel coating need to have good dispersibility and weldability, and can be welded for many times and be compatible with various fluxes. However, the solderability of some products is poor. What factors will affect the solderability of electroless nickel coating?

According to the field experience and the characteristics of the product electroless nickel plating solution Ni-809, Bigolly Technology has made an analysis, which mainly includes the following six factors:

    1. Effect of phosphorus content in the coating.Phosphorus content has a direct effect on the deposition hook and corrosion resistance of chemical nickel layer.Generally, the weldability of electroless nickel coating is better when the phosphorus content is controlled at 7%~9%, but the weldability is worse when the phosphorus content is higher. Therefore, in the production process, the bath should adjust the composition concentration to ensure a constant phosphorus content of the coating.

    2. The influence of bath pH and temperature.Too high pH value in general chemical nickel plating solution will reduce the phosphorus content in the coating, the corrosion resistance of the coating and the welding performance. The pH value of the plating solution should be controlled within 4.8~5.2 to ensure that the coating has good weldability.

    3. Influence of electroless nickel coating structure. In general, the smaller the particles deposited on the chemical nickel coating, the better the compactness of the coating, the better the corrosion resistance and weldability of the coating. However, any defects or irregularities in the chemical nickel coating may lead to local over corrosion, resulting in poor corrosion resistance and weldability of the coating.

    4. The influence of deposition rate of chemical nickel layer.During the production process of electroless nickel plating, we can control the normal deposition rate of the chemical nickel layer by adjusting the temperature and pH value of the plating solution, as well as the concentration of the plating solution components, so as to ensure the compactness of the nickel phosphorus alloy layer and avoid cracks between grains at the boundary.Generally, the plating rate of electroless nickel plating should be controlled within 12~18 μm/H, which can ensure that the coating has good weldability.

    5. Effect of stabilizers in electroless nickel plating bath. The stabilizer can maintain the stability of the bath and inhibit the spontaneous reduction and precipitation of nickel. When the content of stabilizer in the bath is low, the stability of the bath is poor, the bath is easy to decompose, the coating is rough, and the solderability is poor.

    6. The influence of service cycle of electroless nickel plating solution. With the progress of production, the by-product phosphite will be produced in the bath and pollute the bath. The accumulation of organic matter in the plating solution is more, the deposition rate is slower, and the organic matter inclusion in the coating is more, so the weldability of the coating is poor. When the Ni-809 plating solution is used for 8~12 cycles, the plating solution can be properly replaced.

Therefore, we should pay attention to the above six points in the process of using electroless nickel plating solution to ensure that the electroless nickel coating has good weldability. If you are interested in the electroless nickel plating solution, please contact the Bigolly customer service for free samples and detailed technical information!
