In the field of electroplating, black zinc passivator is widely used to enhance the corrosion resistance of zinc plating. Salt spray testing is one of the most important methods to measure the corrosion resistance of a coating. In this article, we will discuss in detail several key factors affecting the salt spray capability when using black zinc passivators, with special reference to why Bigely black zinc passivator BZ-216 performs so well in the salt spray test.

I. Passivation film formation and quality

Black zinc passivator can form a dense passivation film on the surface of the zinc coating, this film can effectively block the external corrosive media (such as moisture, oxygen, chloride ions, etc.) and zinc layer contact, thus slowing down the occurrence of corrosion. The quality of the passivation film directly affects its corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance, adhesion and appearance of the passivate film are important indicators of the performance of the passivate film. The use of Bigely black zinc passivator,BZ-216, enables the formation of a homogeneous, black and bright passivate film and improves the salt spray test capability to more than 96 hours.

II. Galvanized layer quality and surface condition

The quality of the zinc coating has a direct impact on the effectiveness of the passivation film. Before proceeding with the black zinc passivation process, it is necessary to ensure that the thickness, adhesion and homogeneity of the zinc coating are up to standard. The microstructure of the plated surface also influences the adsorption and reaction of the passivate. Workpieces with rough, oily or contaminated surfaces, even after passivation, may not have the same salt spray performance as workpieces with smooth, clean surfaces. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the quality and surface condition of the galvanized layer is good before applying a black zinc passivator.

III. Use of sealing treatment

In order to further improve the corrosion resistance of passivate films, it is often necessary to apply a sealing treatment to the passivate film. The sealing treatment fills the tiny pores in the passivation film and improves its densification. The salt spray capability can be further improved by using Bigely galvanizing sealer BH-1209.
