Electroless nickel plating is a process of depositing a layer of nickel-phosphorus alloy on a metal surface through a chemical reaction. This alloy layer has good structure and performance, of which the hardness is one of the important indexes to measure the quality of the layer. As a R&D and sales engineer of electroless nickel concentrates, I know that the effect of plating temperature on the hardness of electroless nickel plating layer is very important.

In the process of using electroless nickel concentrates, the plating temperature is a key factor affecting the deposition rate of the plating layer, the stability of the plating solution and the quality of the plating layer. An increase in temperature accelerates the chemical reaction rate and ionic migration, thus speeding up the deposition of the plated layer. However, too high a temperature may also lead to instability of the bath, which is prone to auto-decomposition and affects the quality of the plated layer. What's more, temperature has a significant effect on the hardness of the plated layer. On the one hand, appropriate temperature control can balance the deposition rate and grain refinement, thus enhancing the hardness of the plated layer; on the other hand, too high a temperature may lead to grain growth, but reduce the hardness of the plated layer.

To illustrate the effect of temperature on the hardness of the plated layer, we refer to Bigely electroless nickel concentrate Ni-809, which is properly formulated to give a hardness of 550-650 HV. When electroless nickel plating with Ni-809 is applied, if the application temperature is too high, the grains in the layer may overgrow, resulting in a reduction in hardness. On the contrary, if the temperature is too low, the deposition rate will be slowed down and the layer may not be dense enough, which will also affect the hardness. Therefore, choosing the right plating temperature is the key to obtaining a high hardness coating.
