Blue-white zinc passivator and determination of corrosion resistance of passivate coatings

In the field of metal processing and protection, blue and white zinc passivators are widely used to improve the corrosion resistance of galvanized layers. Among them, blue-white zinc passivation is favored for its good corrosion resistance and ease of operation. This article describes how to test the corrosion resistance of passivated layers with blue-white zinc passivator using a neutral salt spray test.

The blue and white zinc passivation solution can effectively isolate the contact between zinc layer and corrosive medium by forming a stable and dense blue and white passivation film on zinc electroplating, thus improving the corrosion resistance of zinc layer. BZ-212 is a trivalent chromium blue zinc water specially designed for zinc plating. The passivation film of BZ-212 can withstand the salt spray test for more than 72 hours in the roll-galvanizing process without white rust. In the hanging plating, it can withstand more than 96 hours of salt spray test. This good performance is due to the ability of BZ-212 to form a dense blue "chromium" film on the surface of alkaline, acidic and cyanide galvanizing layers.

Neutral salt spray test is one of the methods to evaluate the corrosion resistance of galvanized sheet passivation layer. The method simulates a marine environment by placing a specimen in a salt spray test chamber containing a certain concentration of sodium chloride solution, exposing the surface of the specimen to the salt spray environment, and observing and recording the surface changes, such as corrosion, blistering, and flaking, etc. The NSS test has been widely adopted because of its wide range of applications and ease of operation.

Evaluation of results: Based on the test results, the corrosion resistance of passivated layers can be evaluated. For example,BZ-212 has withstood more than 72 hours of salt spray testing in barrel plating without white rust, indicating good corrosion resistance of the passivated layer.
