In the electroplating industry, the bright acid copper process is favored for its ability to produce a bright and flat plated appearance and fast deposition rate. However, the oxidization and discoloration of the plated layer has always been a problem for plating workers. In this issue, we will discuss the causes of oxidation and discoloration of the plated layer, and introduce how to use the right acid copper brightener.

First of all, the excess of brightener in the plating solution is one of the important causes of oxidized discoloration of the plated layer. Brighteners can refine the crystallization of the plated layer, improve the dispersing ability in the low-current zone and the bright leveling performance in the high and middle zones. However, when there is an excess of brightener, cloudy deposits or obvious bright “breaks” are formed in the low zone, resulting in oxidative discoloration of the plated layer.

Secondly, the content of organic impurities in the plating solution is also a key factor affecting the quality of the plating layer. In the electroplating process, organic impurities such as decomposition products of additives and oils and fats in the plating solution will gradually accumulate, resulting in rough and brittle plating layer and oxidative discoloration easily. The presence of organic impurities will interfere with the normal deposition of copper ions, thus affecting the uniformity and denseness of the coating.
