Someone once conducted an experiment and found that after being placed at room temperature (19-23℃) for two years, the hardness change of the Ni-P coating was most obvious in the low-phosphorus layer, while the medium and high-phosphorus coatings were relatively stable. For instance, the HV of the 4.5%P coating decreased from 732 to 652.

When using electroless nickel plating solution, the factor that has the greatest impact on the hardness of the coating is heat treatment. There are many reports on the relationship between processing temperature, holding time and hardness. When in use, the selection can be made based on the working conditions and the purpose of use.

Bigely engineers have studied the relationship between the heat treatment temperature and hardness of coatings with various phosphorus contents. They found that in the initial stage, the hardness of the coating increases with the increase of heat treatment temperature. When the temperature reaches around 400℃, the hardness can reach its maximum value. After that, as the temperature increases, the hardness decreases instead. Within the range of 400 to 800℃, the hardness almost linearly decreases. In addition, the heat treatment temperature at which the low-phosphorus coating reaches its maximum hardness is relatively low.
