What role does stannous sulfate play in bright tin plating baths? When used in appropriate quantities, it helps increase deposition rates. However, if the stannous sulfate content falls below process specifications, the following adverse effects may occur:
① The permissible current density range is significantly reduced
② Slow coating deposition rate
③ Production efficiency has correspondingly decreased
④ The coating is prone to scorching
An electroplating plant in Anhui encountered a problem where the coating burned during the use of Bigely acid tin brightener. Initially, their technicians believed excessive current density was the cause, but reducing the current density did not resolve the issue. Therefore, Bigely engineers were invited to inspect the bath solution. After laboratory analysis, they discovered the stannous sulfate concentration had fallen below 30 grams per liter. After ruling out other factors (such as bath temperature, cathode movement frequency, and workpiece shape), they determined the cause of the burnt coating was the excessively low concentration of the main salt. The issue was resolved by adjusting the stannous sulfate content back to the specified process range.
