Hard chromium plating, as a classic wear-resistant coating in industrial applications, is naturally compared with electroless nickel plating when it is promoted and applied. How can the wear resistance of hard chromium plating and electroless nickel plating be compared? Under what circumstances is a electroless nickel plating layer suitable? What kind of electroless nickel plating solution can help improve the wear resistance of the coating?
These two types of coatings should be studied and distinguished based on their microstructure and properties, especially their tribological characteristics. The questions of whether Ni-P can replace hard chromium and under what conditions it is more applicable than hard chromium can be summarized as follows:
1.Under light load and lubrication conditions, the wear resistance of the heat-treated Ni-P layer on the friction surface is comparable to that of the hard chromium layer, and sometimes even better than that of the hard chromium layer.
2.After using the electroless nickel plating solution, for Ni-P coatings of different thicknesses, the wear and weight loss of the thin coating without heat treatment was significantly lower than that of the thick coating. Moreover, after heat treatment, the wear resistance of the coating tends to stabilize, indicating that the coating does not need to be too thick.
3.After long-term running-in under low load (0.0246MPa) and then operation under high load (0.0492MPa), the wear resistance of the thin Ni-P (7.5μm) without heat treatment is better than that of the thick coating after heat treatment. However, the hard chromium layer that has been finely ground and running-in under low load has much better wear resistance than the former. That is, the wear resistance of electroless nickel-phosphorus alloy under high load is not as good as that of hard chromium.
