When using the electroless nickel concentrate solution, if the electroplating factory fails to control the pH value properly, it will affect the performance of many coatings.
The influence of pH value on the performance of the coating is primarily manifested in the change of phosphorus content in the coating.
In the previous article, we discussed the influence of pH value on the deposition rate, and the two variables exhibited a positive correlation.
The relationship between the change in phosphorus content of the coating and the change in deposition rate is opposite. As the pH value increases, the phosphorus content decreases. Conversely, when the pH value is low, the phosphorus content in the coating is high.
During the process of using the electroless nickel concentrate solution, the Bigely engineers discovered that changes in pH value also affect the stress distribution in the coating. A high pH solution results in a lower phosphorus content in the coating, presenting tensile stress. Conversely, a low pH solution leads to a higher phosphorus content in the coating, typically resulting in compressive stress.
A solution with a high pH value is prone to causing the surface of the substrate to become passivated, which is the reason for the decrease in adhesion. However, if the pH value of the solution is too low, it will result in strong corrosion and a slow deposition rate, causing the substrate surface to be easily corroded and leading to a decrease in adhesion. Therefore, the engineer of Bigely believed that it would be more appropriate to control the pH value within the range of 4.8 to 5.1 when designing the formula of the electroless nickel concentrate solution.
