Why is it not recommended to use fluoride-containing hard chrome additives?
Compared to sulfate-only plating baths, baths containing fluoride-based hard chromium additives offer certain advantages: higher current efficiency, the ability to operate at higher deposition rates, and the production of harder and brighter deposits. Fluoride provides excellent dispersion and coverage capabilities.
However, there are also significant drawbacks: the addition of such chromium plating additives greatly increases the bath solution's sensitivity to changes in composition and to iron and aluminum impurities. Consequently, greater attention must be paid to bath impurities, requiring more frequent analysis, control, and management. Additionally, analyzing and controlling either monofluoride or complex fluoride compounds is relatively complex for electroplating plants, and these compounds can corrode low-lying areas of the substrate. Some electroplating plants do not routinely perform chemical analyses on their plating solutions, and even when they do, the results may not be accurate. Consequently, the use of fluoride-containing hard chromium additives represents a burden for them.
