The reason for using phosphorus copper anodes in the electroplating process that employs acid copper brightener

When using the acid copper brightener, we always use copper anodes containing phosphorus instead of those without phosphorus. Why is that?

Bigely Technology conducted an analysis based on on-site experience and the characteristics of the product acid copper brightener Cu-510. We use phosphorus-containing copper anodes to remove or reduce the generation of copper powder in the plating solution, reduce anode polarization, and ensure uniform dissolution of the anode during the electroplating process. Anodes without phosphorus dissolve faster in the plating solution, have high anode current efficiency, and can lead to the accumulation of copper ions in the plating solution. When there is a lot of copper powder in the plating solution, the workpiece coating becomes rough, forms nodules, and at the same time, the amount of anode sludge increases.

When we use high-quality phosphorus-copper anodes, a black protective film will form on the surface of the anode during the electroplating process. This film controls the dissolution rate of copper, makes the current efficiency of the anode close to that of the cathode, keeps the copper ions in the plating solution in balance, and significantly reduces the generation of anode sludge.

In copper anodes, the phosphorus content should be maintained appropriately. When the phosphorus content is too low, the black film on the anode is too thin and insufficient to provide protection; while if the phosphorus content is too high, the black film on the anode becomes too thick, which can easily lead to anode shielding and passivation, affecting the anode dissolution and reducing the copper ions in the plating solution. Therefore, if the phosphorus content in the copper anode plate is too low or too high, it will increase the consumption of acid copper brightener, affect the quality of the coating, and cause large fluctuations in the copper ion concentration in the plating solution. This will increase the workload in plating solution maintenance and management.
