During the process of using chromium plating additives, the plating solution is relatively sensitive to impurities. When the impurity content is high, it will affect the brightness of the coating and the performance quality of the coating. So, what impurities affect the plating solution?
1.Metal impurities. The harmful impurities in chromium plating solution mainly include iron, copper, zinc, nickel, etc. The main sources of these metal impurities are the dissolution of metal in the uncovered parts of the workpiece, the dissolution of the workpiece after it falls into the plating bath and is not retrieved in time, the corrosion of the anode material, and the metal ions dissolved during the anode activation treatment of the workpiece, etc. These metal impurities will affect the electrical conductivity of the plating solution, reducing its dispersion and deep plating capabilities, and narrowing the bright current density of the coating.
2. Chloride ions. Chromium plating solution is relatively sensitive to chloride ions, with an allowable value of less than 0.3g/L. The main sources of chloride ions are the introduction of production water for preparing bath solutions and the introduction of plated parts into the plating solution due to incomplete cleaning before plating. When the chloride ion content in the plating solution is relatively high, it will reduce the current efficiency and coverage capacity of the plating solution. The coating will show phenomena such as graying, mottling, and pinholes, thereby reducing the corrosion resistance of the coating.
3. Nitrate ions. A small amount of nitrate ions in the plating solution can cause the coating to turn grayish black and also damage the lead lining of the plating bath. When the nitrate ion content in the plating solution reaches 1g/L, the cathode current density needs to be increased to deposit the chromium layer.
