When we use electroless nickel plating solution, how do the composition of the plating solution and process parameters affect the stress of the coating?
The influence of the above two factors on the stress of the coating is comprehensive. Not only the composition of the plating solution, pH value or temperature can cause changes in the internal stress of the coating, but also the circulation period of the plating solution is related. The longer the usage time, the greater the stress.
Bigely once studied the influence of pH value and temperature of plating baths (acid baths and alkali baths) on stress. The research results all reflected that pH value was a sensitive factor, while the influence of temperature was relatively small. In an acid bath, when the pH is high, the coating is under tensile stress; when the pH is low, it gradually transforms into compressive stress.
Additives in electroplating can improve the stress state of the coating, and experiments have proved that they are equally effective for electroless plating. For instance, adding certain additives to the electroless plating solution can not only slightly increase the phosphorus content of the coating but also reduce the stress. In addition, some other components can also reduce the stress of the coating and even convert tensile stress into compressive stress.
