When using alkaline zinc plating additives, sometimes the following phenomenon occurs: the barrel suddenly explodes while rotating. What is the reason for this?

During the galvanizing process, a large amount of hydrogen is evolved at the cathode. The cathode current efficiency of zincate galvanizing is relatively low, ranging from 70% to 80%. The hydrogen gas generated during electroplating cannot be promptly vented through the barrel openings, leading to the accumulation of a significant amount of hydrogen gas inside the barrel. Many production barrels are not fully submerged, and air is present inside the barrel. If the anode area is small, the anode current density will be relatively high, causing the anode to become passivated. As a result, the plating solution contains a mixture of hydrogen, oxygen, and air, forming a certain volume ratio. When this reaches the explosive limit, it can cause the barrel to explode.

Alkaline plating solutions have high resistance. During barrel plating production, operators should strengthen management of the plating solution, and plating solution parameters should be controlled within the specified process range. When the plating solution temperature is high, friction during barrel plating can easily generate sparks, which is also a condition that can cause explosions.
